ABS-CBN clears Julius Babao
ABS-CBN NETWORK YESTERDAY cleared its broadcaster Julius Babao of allegations that he had posted bail for a terror suspect, and said that President Macapagal-Arroyo's airing of the false charge "could send a chilling effect" to media.
Citing what it said were the results of its thorough investigation, the network giant said Babao "did not violate any ethical boundaries as a journalist" in pursuing his stories and he would resume his anchoring duties on Nov. 14.
The Inquirer originally carried the report quoting Ms Arroyo as telling Inquirer columnist Ramon Tulfo that Babao had provided the bail for Tyrone del Rosario Santos, also known as Dawud, a member of a group of Islamic converts linked by the military to terror bombings. Ms Arroyo had told Tulfo she was citing a military intelligence report.
"After a thorough investigation ABS-CBN concludes that Julius Babao did not post nor guarantee bail in the case of suspected terrorist Dawud Santos," an ABS-CBN statement said.
"ABS-CBN values its reputation and that of its employees," it said. "That is why we embarked on this exercise of accountability and hope Isafp (Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines) and Malacaņang will do the same."
In its report accompanying the statement, the network said: "In this highly charged political environment, this case is unique because the false charges were made by a sitting President, and that could send a chilling effect to all working journalists today."
"Incidents like this only tarnish the reputations of all institutions involved and highlights the demand for greater accountability," it added. "It partly explains why our nation is undergoing a crisis of confidence and faith."
The military did not withdraw its report despite Babao's denials but said later it was based on circumstantial evidence.
ABS-CBN said that in the course of its investigation, intelligence agents it did not identify had admitted to the network that they had little evidence to support the claim and "they never expected their raw intelligence to be revealed publicly."
"Complicating matters further, there is active disinformation circulating that could further damage relations between President Arroyo and ABS-CBN," the investigation report said. (INQ7)
